There are so many little things couples don’t realize until they start planning a wedding.

1. Guest count, catering, rentals, layout, and even your décor all depend on the venue you choose.

2. Food, bar, rentals, florals, invitations, and seating all increase with every guest added.

3. Popular photographers, planners, DJs, and venues can fill their calendars quickly.

4. Without a solid timeline, weddings often run late and feel rushed. Vendors need to know what’s going on and when.

5. Build intentional moments into your timeline so you can actually enjoy it.

Wedding traditions say the bride’s family covered most of the wedding while the groom’s family paid for specific things like the rehearsal dinner.

But today, most weddings look a little different. Couples often contribute the largest portion, and many families split costs based on what they’re comfortable helping with rather than strict traditions.

The order you book your wedding vendors actually matters more than most couples realize.

Some vendors (like venues and planners) book out a year or more in advance, while others come later in the planning process. Knowing the right order helps you secure the vendors that shape your day first and prevents the stress of trying to piece everything together last minute.

When couples plan strategically, they’re able to build their dream vendor team, stay on schedule, and avoid the panic that comes from realizing a key vendor is already booked.

Whether you’re planning a Northern Michigan destination wedding, a Midwest countryside celebration, or something in between, following a timeline like this will keep your planning process smooth and organized.

Save this for later if you’re newly engaged — it’ll make wedding planning a lot easier.

Shena and Jordan’s September wedding in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula was a fun and lively celebration. Surrounded by family, hometown friends, and college friends, the energy throughout the day was upbeat and full of joy. Their golf course reception featured a soft pink and blush palette with touches of gold, a huge selection of cupcakes from a local bakery, and a truly beautiful sunset to end the evening. From a fun reception entrance to cruising around on scooters and golf carts during photos, it was a relaxed and memorable day with plenty of personality.

Nikki and Ryan’s September wedding at Castle Farms was such a joy to be part of. They are a kind, calm, and genuinely loving couple, surrounded by friends who truly know how to celebrate. The décor was simple and elegant, letting their connection shine, and the dance floor stayed full all night long. When an unexpected challenge came up just days before the wedding, Nikki handled it with so much grace and care for her guests—and thanks to an incredible last-minute caterer, everything came together beautifully. A day full of love, laughter, and the best kind of energy.
