As we enjoy some rain for our parched lawns and gardens, its a good time to remind you about "fall cleanup". Some may choose to rake and clean up and that is lovely. Some may choose to wait - giving our lawns nutrients to the soil as leaves slowly decompose and give wildlife protection and material for their habitat.
We also like to clean up our perennials in the fall. Deadhead your hydrangeas, but please only cut back dead wood, otherwise that could inadvertently remove new buds already starting for next season. Deadhead, and save, your marigolds and zinnias as they will give you all the seeds you need for next year simply by letting them dry completely out and storing for spring.
Its never too early to plan your gardens -- even as we begin "pumpkin and mum season". Happy Fall!

It’s that time of year again! And yes, we are beginning to get our mum’s in! and it’s been a minute since we did some symbolism and meanings so here we go!!
Chrysanthemums have diverse meanings and symbolism but the most common in the USA are friendship, happiness, joy, well-being, and longevity. And of course, each color can carry a specific meaning.
Red mum’s symbolize, deep love and passion .
White represent loyalty and honesty, but also carry strong connections to death and morning in cultures outside of the US
Violet can signify a wish for the receiver to get well and yellow represent friendship, joy, good fortune, and happiness.
Of course, these interpretations are often dependent on the cultural context. So in different parts of the world there will be different meanings.

Today’s wellness recipe is all about Elderberries! Delicous, immune boosting and grows in many a CT backyard. While they cannot be consumed raw, once cooked they are quite beneficial. Please note leaves and stems are never to be used as they are poisonous.
Ok disclaimer aside, you can easily purchase organic berries that are clean and ready to use.

Some benefits include reducing cold and flu symptoms, and has antioxidant properties.

The recipe below is for a syrup - and costs much less than drug stores. You can also make jellies, jams, use in baked goods, smoothies, yogurt, tea or even top it on ice cream!

Yes there are many things you can add to this recipe but here is a basic one that is delicious and works well:

1/2 c elderberries
1 stick cinnamon
5 cloves (whole)
1” piece fresh ginger (or 1 TBSP ground ginger)
2 c water

Add all to saucepan and bring to a boil; reduce to a simmer until liquid is reduced by half. Remove from heat and let cool slightly.
Add honey to taste - approximately 1 c.
Stir to dissolve.
Pour into glass jar and store in refrigerator.
That’s it! Take 1 to 2 tablespoons daily. If unwell take every few hours. Enjoy and be well!!
(This recipe can easily be doubled)

Now that we are heading into fall, we all know that means sniffles and illness being passed around. This week we will share some homemade things that might help - and of course use things you just might have in your gardens.

Today it’s Fire Cider - A spicy, pungent, herbal tonic with a sweet glow. Drink it each morning to enjoy its health-boosting effects or get creative and explore the many ways to use fire cider shared in the post! Fire Cider Tonic is an age-old folk remedy that is popular in the herbal community, especially popular during flu season.

Because this is a folk preparation, the ingredients can change from year to year depending on when you make it and what's growing around you. The standard base ingredients are apple cider vinegar, garlic, onion, ginger, horseradish, and hot peppers, but there are plenty of other herbs that can be thrown in for added kick. There are many ways to makeke this, justt sharing the basic one Feel free to alter to your desired taste
Fire cider can be taken straight by the spoonful, added to organic veggie juice (throw in some olives and pickles for a non-alcoholic, healthy bloody mary!), splashed in fried rice, or drizzled on a salad with good olive oil. You can also save the strained pulp and mix it with shredded veggies like carrots, cabbage, broccoli, and fresh herbs to make delicious and aromatic stir-fries and spring rolls.

Classic Mountain Rose Herbs Fire Cider Recipe:

1 medium organic onion, chopped
10 cloves of organic garlic, crushed or chopped
2 organic jalapeno peppers, chopped
Zest and juice from 1 organic lemon
1/2 cup fresh grated organic ginger root (or organic ginger root powder)
1/2 cup fresh grated organic horseradish root (or organic horseradish powder)
1 Tbsp. organic turmeric powder
1/4 tsp. organic cayenne powder
2 Tbsp. of dried rosemary leaves
Organic apple cider vinegar
1/4 cup of raw, local honey, or to taste

Directions

Prepare your roots, fruits, and herbs and place them in a quart-sized glass jar. If you've never grated fresh horseradish, be prepared for a powerful sinus-opening experience!
Pour the apple cider vinegar in the jar until all of the ingredients are covered and the vinegar reaches the jar's top.
Use a piece of natural parchment paper under the lid to keep the vinegar from touching the metal, or a plastic lid if you have one. Shake well.
Store in a dark, cool place for a month and remember to shake daily.
After one month, use cheesecloth to strain out the pulp, pouring the vinegar into a clean jar. Be sure to squeeze as much of the liquidy goodness as you can from the pulp while straining.
Next comes the honey. Add and stir until incorporated.
Taste your cider and add more honey until you reach the desired sweetness.

Have fun with this and If this is too spicy for your palette tomorrow’s post may suit you better! Stay well!
