It was the fall of 2014 in New York City. Tucked away in the Vilcek study room, two medical students caught each other’s eye. One was Andres, who had just made the big move from Canada to the Big Apple with dreams of becoming a doctor. The other was Sydney, who had left her home in Maryland with similar aspirations. After sparking up some casual small talk over the Krebs Cycle, they quickly discovered a major red flag – they were fans of rival NFL teams…and not just any rival NFL teams but interdivisional teams. Andres was a Bills fan while Sydney a Patriots fan. Andres had just endured over a decade of torture as the Brady-led Patriots had toyed with the AFC East and his beloved Bills en-route to 10+ years of AFC East supremacy. Sydney was riding the high of a dynasty team. Most interactions would have ended there, however, Andres knew there was something special there and made the crazy decision to bet Sydney that the Bills would beat the Patriots in their upcoming game. As punishment, he would wear a Patriots jersey for the next Bills-Patriots matchup. The inevitable happened, and Andres lost the bet…but really he won, and the rest is history.

Now fast-forward 10 (!!) years and Andres and Sydney have really been on quite the journey. They supported each other through the trials and tribulations of medical school, residency, and fellowship. They survived a global pandemic as residents in the epicenter of it all - Sydney as an intern at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center taking care of some of the sickest COVID patients, and Andres as an emergency medicine resident on the frontlines at Elmhurst Hospital, the epicenter of the epicenter. And while the world shut down and sheltered in place, Andres and Sydney leaned on one another and grew stronger as a couple.

Over the years, Andres and Sydney have been so fortunate to have gone on many adventures and to have travelled the world together. They have eaten some of the most delicious food and have experienced some of the most beautiful cultures (take them back to Greece or Cartagena anytime). Sydney has helped turn Andres into a true foodie, helping him pick up quite the palate for Asian food (in particular jook…yum!) and Andres is helping Sydney finally learn Spanish (talk to her in Spanish!...but slowly).

Most importantly, Andres and Sydney are so happy and lucky to have such amazing family and friends that have supported them throughout their journey. They cannot wait to celebrate this special day with all of their loved ones and most favorite people.
