At sixteen, with boarding school behind her and a restless spirit stirring inside, a young Canadian girl stumbled upon an ad that read, “Brains, Beauty & Breeches – World Tour Offer for Lucky Young Woman.” That’s how Idris Galcia Hall—soon to be known to the world as Aloha Wanderwell—set off on a journey that would redefine what it meant to be adventurous, fearless, and female.

Born in Winnipeg in 1906, Aloha lost her father in World War I, and her mother moved the family to Europe, where she attended a French convent school. But confinement never suited her. When she saw that bold advertisement, something inside her sparked. She wanted the open road, the unfamiliar, the wild hum of possibility—and she went after it.

At just sixteen, she joined the global expedition of “Captain” Walter Wanderwell and climbed behind the wheel of a Ford Model T. From 1922 to 1927, she drove through deserts, jungles, and war-torn lands—becoming the first woman to circumnavigate the globe by car, and earning the title “the world’s most widely traveled girl.”

But she wasn’t just along for the ride. Aloha was the mechanic, translator, filmmaker, and chronicler of her own adventure. She negotiated with tribal leaders, mended tires in the heat, filmed the unknown, and stood before audiences to tell her story. She was bold but graceful, unflinching yet deeply human—an explorer in a world that rarely gave women permission to explore.

Her travels took her across Africa, Asia, the Middle East, and beyond. She endured breakdowns, border conflicts, and stretches of road that were more dream than dirt. Yet through it all, she radiated an unmistakable sense of wonder. The world didn’t open itself easily to her—she opened herself to the world.

After that first monumental journey, Aloha continued to film, to write, and to share her story. She inspired women to look at adventure not as a privilege, but as a calling—to step into the unknown and claim it as their own.
