Did you know one of the world's most recognizable D-Day memorial sculptures has a sister sculpture right here in Southeast Michigan?

French artist Anilore Banon created Les Braves on Omaha Beach in Normandy, France, to honor the Allied forces who landed on D-Day. She later created Les Braves II: At Water's Edge, which stands on the grounds of The War Memorial overlooking Lake St. Clair.

The War Memorial is one of only two places in the world where visitors can experience this powerful work of art.

Comprised of three sections—Wings of Hope, Rise, Freedom!, and Wings of Fraternity—the sculpture conveys messages of hope, freedom, and human connection that continue to resonate today.

As the 82nd anniversary of D-Day approaches this Saturday, we invite you to visit, reflect, and remember those whose courage and sacrifice helped shape the course of history.

An Evening of Red, White & Blue was a celebration of America the Beautiful - its history, its promise, and the people who have fought to see it endure for over 250 years. This gathering deserved to be in the hands of people who cared deeply about getting it right.

And it was. We are grateful beyond words for the talented and dedicated professionals who came together and poured their time, talent, and passion into this evening and not just because it was their craft, but because they believed in what it stood for.

"What is legacy? It's planting seeds in a garden you never get to see." — Hamilton

To everyone who was in the room where it happened — thank you.

An evening like this begins with people who believe deeply in something larger than themselves. We are profoundly grateful to our Honorary Co-Chairs Fred & Veronica Alger, whose commitment to this place and its history is woven into everything we do. And to our Co-Presenting Sponsors Jeffrey Smith & Lisa Vallee-Smith and Mary & Ron Lamparter — your generosity made this evening possible.

To our Planning Committee, Honorary Committee, Board of Directors, and every guest who joined us — you are the reason this mission endures.

Don't miss your chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime African Safari and support a mission that matters. Bidding remains open through Friday, and there is still time to donate to the fundraising effort.

Coffee. Conversation. Camaraderie.

Join fellow veterans for a free Vet-to-Vet gathering on Thursday, June 11, from 8–9 a.m. at The War Memorial. Whether you're newly discharged or long retired, this welcoming monthly gathering offers an opportunity to connect with other veterans, share stories, and enjoy good company over coffee.

This month, we'll also welcome special guest Valde Garcia, planning committee deputy chair for the Congressional Medal of Honor Society Convention 2026. Garcia will provide an insider's look at this historic event coming to Detroit Sept. 30–Oct. 3, when Michigan hosts the nation's largest annual gathering of living Medal of Honor recipients for the first time.

Come for the camaraderie. Stay for the conversation. Leave with a deeper connection to fellow veterans and an exciting look at what's ahead for the veteran community.

This is what it looks like when a community shows up for something that matters.

Last Wednesday evening, guests gathered at The War Memorial for An Evening of Red, White & Blue — standing together, hands on hearts, in a moment that captured exactly why this place and this mission exist. To honor those who served, and to recommit ourselves to the work they made possible.

The evening has passed. The mission endures. Auction bidding on a once-in-a-lifetime African Safari trip remains open through Friday, and there is still time to support the work that made this night possible.
