Historic Greer Depot

Constructed in 1913, Charles Christian Hook of Charlotte, North Carolina, designed the depot as a combination passenger station and freight warehouse for the Piedmont & Northern Railway, later used by the Seaboard Coast Line Railroad, Seaboard System Railroad and finally CSX Transportation, before facing potential demolition in 1984. Saved from the wrecking ball by Greenville County Redevelopment

Authority, it was finally sold to Station One Partnership in 1987 and redeveloped as retail and office space. Fast forward to 2017... Letchworth Properties, LLC purchased the Historic Greer Depot with the hope of fully restoring it to its original grandeur. The building now serves as the General and Administrative offices of Western Carolina Railway Service Corporation, Greenville & Western Railway Company, LLC, Aiken Railway Company, LLC and Letchworth Properties, LLC; and with the conversion of the former warehouse space now complete, a new Event Venue and Meeting Space was opened August 5, 2021.

Every time we pull into the parking lot, it’s as though the hands of time spin backwards and a sense of calm settles over us. We are so fortunate to still be enjoying the architectural beauty of this special place 112 years after it was built. While James Buchanan Duke likely never foresaw what the future would look like for Historic Greer Depot, we’re pretty sure he’d be pleased. ❤️

Yesterday was an exciting day at Historic Greer Depot. Back in March, we were given the opportunity to acquire a second former Southern Railway baggage cart. The cart had spent many, many years outside, and while time and the weather had taken its toll… it was in great overall structural condition.

Now, since we already had one former Southern Railway baggage cart, and with Historic Greer Depot being a former Piedmont & Northern depot, and since no P&N baggage carts are known to have survived, it seemed like the perfect opportunity to honor the P&N with our new addition.

After picking up the cart in Greenville and delivering it straight to Southern Painting in Pelzer, we got busy trying to figure out how to best represent the P&N when we rehabilitated this “new” cart. The old P&N carts were made of wood, so this all-steel cart would just need to be a respectful interpretation of what might have been.

We chose black and gold to match the P&N locomotives of the day and a red that was a close match to the Railway Express Agency red of that time period. Using a variety of period photos, we settled on the P&N font used on their locomotives in the 19-teens and turned to St. Clair Signs to hand draw a template of this now non-existent font.

After blasting, priming, painting and lettering… the finished baggage cart was ready to come home from Pelzer yesterday and it served proudly last night as the centerpiece of our reconfigured buffet line, with our former P&N locomotive bell heading up the line in compliment to the new cart.

We would be remiss to not acknowledge that this cart was only saved from the scrapper due to the foresight of the late J. A. “Jim” Crenshaw, who retired as a General Foreman with Norfolk Southern after 41 years of service with Southern Railway and Norfolk Southern Railway. It was the daughter of this Greenville railroader who thought of us earlier this year when it came time for her to find a new home for this treasure.

Be sure to appreciate and enjoy our new addition next time you visit or attend an event at Historic Greer Depot!
