Join Clemson Extension Horticulture Agent Stephanie Turner for a look at ways you can invite bees into your garden. Learn how to support both native bees and honey bees with simple activities you can incorporate into your home landscape.

We join our community in remembering and honoring the life of L. Ruple Harley, Jr. (April 29, 1944 – July 13, 2026), whose vision, leadership, and unwavering commitment helped shape Greenwood for generations.

Ruple was instrumental in establishing the South Carolina Festival of Flowers in 1968, creating a tradition that has become a signature celebration of our community and a source of pride for Greenwood. Serving as Festival Chairman five times, he dedicated countless hours to growing the Festival and sharing Greenwood's story with visitors from across the region.

Beyond the Festival, Ruple was a mentor, a community leader, and a champion for giving back. Whether supporting charitable organizations, investing in future funeral service professionals, or promoting Greenwood at every opportunity, he believed that success came with a responsibility to serve others.

In 2019, his decades of dedication to the Festival were recognized with the Southeast Festivals & Events Association Best Volunteer Award. In 2020, he was further honored with induction into the Greenwood County Hall of Fame, recognizing a lifetime of service and an extraordinary impact on our community.

The Greenwood Chamber of Commerce and the South Carolina Festival of Flowers extend our deepest condolences to the Harley family and all who knew and loved Ruple. His legacy lives on in every bloom, every visitor, and every cherished memory created through the Festival he helped bring to life nearly six decades ago.

Thank you, Ruple, for your vision, your leadership, and your love for Greenwood. Your legacy will continue to bloom for generations to come.
