I stepped outside, confronted by the raw ocean waves tearing through mountain skies. Born and cradled in these sacred mountains, I had never before felt them tremble, or witnessed creek beds knocking at front doors, demanding to be let in. Tires hung on the treetops; homes lay in broken pieces; roads erased completely; families scattered, struggling, missing. Helene, what have you done? Held in disbelief, I was consumed by the loudest silence I have ever heard. Together, we inhaled. Together, we exhaled, releasing an intuitive, collective cry.
As an artist, I practice listening deeply to the language of nature and leaning into the
guidance of intuition. Navigating the wilderness of grief, I found myself in a trance,
absorbing the new landscapes around me. I fell in love with the vibrant colors revealed in Helene’s aftermath. I was inspired by the rich red clay clinging to the roots of fallen oaks. Sitting by the creeks, I marveled at the shifting constellations of mica in the wet sand. I drew closer to the present moment, feeling both collected and scattered, buried and unearthed, falling apart and coming together all at once.
As you enter this space with me, I invite you to explore the interplay of chaos and comfort presented through a mixture of mediums and a mixture of paint and natural minerals. Engage with your own stories of change and survival. Search for the echoes of your own experiences, visually exploring the soft, void spaces alongside the bold, textured gestures.
