Marchingπ Bandπ Isπ Aπ Sportπ
It was in the 100s with the heat index this past week, and I know East Carolina University Marching Pirates were outside training. (Even my high school freshman was out in it). On game days while everyone is tailgating and making it to their seats, the Marching Pirates are out there on the practice field doing their drills, working pregame and halftime shows, plus running their stands music. And then even after the game, after running on and off the field and never really stopping, you can find the drum line outside Dowdy playing their hearts out.
I've said it before and I will say it again - my primary focus is the women's athletic programs and the game day support programs. I do cheer on football, baseball and men's basketball, but I'm at the football games to hype and show support for Band, Color Guard, Dance and Cheerleading.
Without them, our game days would be so dull. They make our purple and gold so bold.
"It's JUST band." ππΊ
Okay, let's talk about this phrase that makes every band kid's eye twitch. "It's JUST band." JUST BAND?!
Let me break down what "just band" actually means:
β
Carrying a 40lb sousaphone in 100Β°F heat (while looking flawless, obviously)
β
Memorizing 147 sets of drill PLUS your music
β
Performing complex choreography while playing an instrument
β
8-to-5 rehearsals in whatever weather decides to throw at us
β
Maintaining perfect posture and interval while your body is actively trying to survive
β
Making split-second decisions while marching at 180 beats per minute
So when someone hits you with "it's just band," and you give them THAT LOOK... they better be ready to carry your instrument, learn your drill, and spend their entire summer on a burning hot field. Because "just band" is a full-contact sport disguised as a performing art! πͺπΆ
We're not "just" anything. We're athletes, musicians, performers, and dedicated individuals who chose to spend our time perfecting an 8-minute show that requires the precision of a surgeon and the endurance of a marathon runner. All while looking good in our uniforms and playing music from memory. No big deal. π
That look on our faces? That's the look of someone who knows EXACTLY how much work goes into this. That's the face of dedication, passion, and "try saying that again after you've marched a full show in August." π₯
So next time someone says "it's just band," feel free to invite them to band camp. We'll see how "just band" they think it is after day one! πβ¨
Who else has gotten "it's just band" from someone and had to resist the urge to make them try it? Tag your section who knows it's NEVER just band! ππ
