On December 17th, WPR's Larry Meiller show featured Wade House Historic Site's Curator, Jim Willaert, and our volunteer, Howard Kietzke. Jim and Howard discussed the history of sleigh transportation during winters in Wisconsin. Visit the link below to listen!

If you'd like to experience a sleigh ride for yourself, join us for the event mentioned by Jim, Over the River and Through the Woods. Tickets can be purchased on our website www.wadehouse.wisconsinhistory.org and make a great Christmas gift idea!

First, we unpack the evolving impact of climate change on Wisconsin tourism and recreation. Then we talk to a certified etiquette instructor about how to be civil when traveling by air. Finally, we look at the history of sleigh transportation in Wisconsin.

History of Wade House

WADES ESTABLISH VILLAGE IN FRONTIER TERRITORY

In 1844 Sylvanus and Betsey Wade and their family settled in what was to become Greenbush. At that time Wisconsin was a frontier territory. The land between Fond du Lac and Sheboygan was a wilderness of virtually uninterrupted forest. Years later, Betsey Wade would tell her children that the forest was so dense that, even on a clear night, she “could hold in her apron all the stars she could see.”

The Wades were the first permanent settlers in Greenbush. They came to the remote area not to carve a single homestead out of the wilderness, but to establish a village on the developing frontier.
