And the overwintered dahlias are thriving! They withstood the prolonged rains and general dreary weather stretch we had. 🧿
I will have to say this process is a good one so far. Many, many shoots have come up. They seem much sturdier and I’m not as concerned with staking as I have been in the past.
Did I have leaves blowing everywhere all spring, yes! But a fair trade off so far for a 90% return on the tubers I left in the ground. I wonder when I will get my first flower? Stay tuned.

This feels so very, very good! It takes years to be able to do one of these. A wedding bouquet mixed with perennials and annual cuttings (at least 10 different items). Crops I have nurtured for 6 years or some only months. Every single stem was grown and cut at an ideal stage here by me; some carefully saved in cooler, some just the day before. Curated and assembled with love…and she already said, I do!

Second full day of prom work is about to start, but when I see these photos I remember this is dream work.
From the growing of the flowers to getting them memorialized in their high school memory banks, I love it all!

For those following along, a heavy frost gave these overwintered dahlias a reality check! Mother Nature is in a mood this year.
I’m sure they will still be fine. An early pinching I will consider this.
But in reality, if you get a dahlia from me this year just know we have both been thru some stress!

I overwintered my dahlias! In zone 6b you should be digging them up to store for the winter. But even with the seriously wintery weather this last season they seem to be very happy. A little too happy!
I uncovered them April 8th and a few days later saw some green tips. Knowing hard frosts were still expected, though the temps were often excessively warm, I shrugged. What will be will be.
But here I am watching them be burned Monday and Tuesday to blackness by frost, and then pushing new growth to look this good Saturday, I just may be onto something. Or not. Probably they could stall for cooler temps ahead in a long drawn out season. But for now it’s a win until it’s a loss! I just may have my best dahlia season yet. Or not. Kind of how the year is going. I’ll keep you posted!

Fresh sheeting, new doors, and an appreciation of the growth in me (and by me) has this flower farmer all kind of optimistic for the next season. The sunshine today is helping as well 😎
