Simple German Wedding Vows

Bräutigam: Groom:

Ich nehme Dich (Name der Braut), zu meiner Gattin (Ehefrau) und verspreche, Dir die Treue zu halten in guten und bösen Tagen, in Gesundheit und Krankheit, ja Dich will ich lieben und achten, bis der Tod uns scheidet.

I take you (bride's name), to be my wife. I promise to be loyal to you in good and bad days, in health and illness, to love and respect, until death separates us.

Braut: Bride:

In Great Britain, it was considered good luck for the bride to kiss a chimney sweep on her wedding day. He supposedly had special powers, and when he cleans the chimney, he also sweeps away evil spirits.

The phrase “tying the knot” initially came from an ancient Babylonian custom in which threads from the clothes of both the bride and bridegroom were tied in a knot to symbolize the couple’s union. Literally tying some type of ceremonial knot at a wedding ceremony can be found across cultures.

Honeymoon

The first weddings comprised of a groom taking his bride by capture. He would take her somewhere hidden away so her relatives and villagers couldn't find them. There they stayed for one moon phase and drank mead, a wine make from honey, to make them more amorous. Thus, the word "honeymoon" was born. Today, the honeymoon is the time when the couple can get away for awhile.
