Can you feel it? May Day magic is in the air! 🌸✨
Rooted in traditions of welcoming spring, May 1st has long been a celebration of renewal, starting with the simple joy of flowers in bloom.
Back in the olden days (the early 80s) when I was a kid growing up in the turnaround (cul de sac) on Libby Drive in Gorham (now Crestwood Drive), on May 1st, I would go out into our yard and pluck all the tiny little flowers that had started growing in the grass. I'd bring a crumpled handful in to my mom and she would put some into a little basket that I would bring across the street to the blind old lady, Mrs. Malley, and her brother, whose actual name I can't remember, but I called him Grasshopper and he called me Ladybug 😂. They'd give me a couple cookies, I would play with her seeing eye dog for a little while (a German Shepherd named Bismark), and then I'd go back home to do what 5 year olds did in the 80's... I played outside until it got dark out.
May has always felt like a special month to me, and not just because it's my birthday month! It’s a month that reminds us how powerful small, beautiful gestures can be.
This month is bursting with reasons to celebrate: Mother’s Day (next Sunday...don’t forget 😉), teacher appreciation, proms, graduations, weddings, fresh starts, longer days, and that first real feeling of warmth soaking into everything. It’s the season of growth—in gardens and in life.
May is probably our busiest month of the year, and we're prepping for all the good things that come with this special month! Because if there’s ever a time to give flowers to celebrate or, even better, for no reason at all… it’s May!
Go drop some blooms on someone’s doorstep. Keep the tradition alive 🌿
*not an actual photo of my 5-year-old hand with crumpled flowers below, but a close resemblance! Hopefully my flower arranging skills have improved over the years! 😉
