Clear Creek runs through the heart of Golden, offering scenic beauty, recreation, and a valuable natural resource all in one popular, sparkling package. Fishermen, kayakers, tubers, sunbathers, runners, bikers, skateboarders, walkers, gold-panners…almost everyone who lives in or visits Golden is drawn to the banks of this popular waterway and the Clear Creek Trail system that runs alongside it for one of the many recreational opportunities it affords. Clear Creek has also been the center of Golden’s commerce since the City was founded, providing a natural water source for Coors Brewery, and the center of many a gold miner’s hopes and dreams during the Gold Rush. Today, the Creek continues to be Golden’s central hub of activity. (Courtesy of cityofgolden.net)

About Us

Although the AMC is now the nation’s premiere facility for mountaineering education and home to many non-profit organizations focused on cultivating the outdoor lifestyle and preservation of the planet, it was once Golden’s High School.

From 1924 – 1956, this building served the citizens as the only highschool in the area. As the city grew enrollment became too large for the building and it went on as Golden’s only middle school from 1956 – 1988. As more schools were built in the area, enrollment decreased until the old brick building lay abandoned, until 1992, when the American Alpine Club and Colorado Mountain Club, with the help of Golden’s Mayor Marv Kay, found the building to be perfect for their shared vision.
