If your email is like mine right now, every other email is an invitation to a webinar. I even got one from my cell phone carrier today. I have been watching quite a few over the past couple weeks and I have a few tips to share if you are planning to present or host a webcast or virtual session. Here are a few simple things you can do that make a difference when presenting online:
1. Choose a Professional Background: Although we are very used to people working at home and webcam use, try to find a professional setting in the house even if it’s a blank wall or bookshelf behind you. Test the lighting and audio before you join – make sure you are well lit and have good sound quality. (And maybe put a “do not disturb” post-it on your door to prevent kiddo invasion)
2. Dress Professionally: You wouldn’t wear your jammies or sweats on stage to present so make sure you are in professional attire.
3. Pick a GOOD Angle: Adjust the camera to a flattering angle – no one looks good from the “looking up the chin” angle. You can also use a mirror to monitor yourself throughout your presentation.
4. Grab a Partner: Leverage the expertise, following, insights or credibility of another presenter or panel of speakers.
5. Pretty Slides: Create interesting slides, make them more visual by using large fonts and images.
6. Stats and Data: Support your content with credible stats, research and data.
7. Energy, Energy, Energy! Your energy level when kicking off a session can make such a difference. You can even try using background music – mix it up and wake them up! (Of course, tailor this strategy to your audience)
8. Engage: Ask your audience questions with polls, surveys and live chat.
9. Socialize: Give your webinar attendees Twitter hashtags to follow and share.
10. Don’t forget the Q&A: End with a Q&A, but make sure to have seed questions ready.
11. Attendee Takeaways: Give attendees takeaways such as a free demo, additional content and/or a copy of the presentation.
12. Follow Up is Key: Send “thank you” and “sorry we missed you” emails that engage all your registrants, nurture those leads and increase your ROI.
