MC Lyte was still a teenager when she started making history in Hip Hop ππ―
In 1988, she released "Lyte as a Rock". It is recognized as the first full-length solo rap album released by a woman. At a time when female MCs were still working hard to be taken seriously, Lyte proved a woman could carry an entire rap album on her own name, voice and talent π₯
And she didnβt stop there. βRuffneckβ later became the first Gold-certified single by a solo female rapper and helped earn Lyte the first Grammy nomination for a woman in rap.
Her impact opened the door wider for generations that followed, from Queen Latifah and Lauryn Hill to Missy Elliott and countless women who came after them.
Before female rappers were headlining festivals, breaking streaming records and dominating the charts, MC Lyte was already proving they belonged at the front of Hip Hop.
She opened and built new doors for future female rappers with her own legacy π€
