Happy Indigenous Peoples' Day! π
Today we celebrate the wisdom, resilience, and traditions of Indigenous communities around the world.
We're proud to honor Tracey, a member of the Lumbee Tribe of North Carolina. Known as the People of the Dark Water, the Lumbee take their name from the Lumber River that flows through their homeland in Robeson County. With more than 60,000 members, they are the largest Native American tribe east of the Mississippi River.
Pembroke, North Carolina is the heart of the community, and home to the University of North Carolina at Pembroke, which began in 1887 as a school established for the tribe. Each year, the Lumbee gather for their beloved Homecoming celebration. Tracey spent many summers and weekends growing up in Pembroke.
This year, the Lumbee Tribe received federal recognition, a historic milestone worth celebrating.
To all Indigenous peoples: today and every day, we honor you. π€
