The Impact of Emotional Abuse
🧠Did You Know?
Emotional abuse can be just as damaging as physical abuse. While it may not leave visible bruises, it can deeply affect a person’s self-esteem, mental health, and overall well-being.
Psychology Fact: Emotional abuse can lead to anxiety, depression, post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS), low self-worth, difficulty trusting others, and challenges in future relationships. Over time, constant criticism, manipulation, gaslighting, and intimidation can change how a person views themselves and the world around them.
đźš© Examples of Emotional Abuse:
* Constant criticism or humiliation
* Gaslighting (making someone question their reality)
* Threats or intimidation
* Silent treatment used as punishment
* Excessive jealousy or possessiveness
* Isolating someone from family and friends
* Controlling finances or daily decisions
đź’š The Good News: Healing is possible. With support, education, counseling, and healthy relationships, survivors can rebuild their confidence, regain their sense of self, and create a future free from abuse.
As a survivor of domestic violence and a Bachelor’s graduate in Psychology, I’m passionate about educating others because abuse isn’t always physical. By learning to recognize emotional abuse, we can support survivors, reduce stigma, and help prevent abuse before it escalates.
💬 Reflection Question: Have you ever heard the phrase, “Words can hurt more than actions”? Why do you think emotional abuse is often overlooked?
✨ Remember: You deserve to be spoken to with kindness, treated with respect, and loved without fear.
🫂 someone reminded me yesterday that when a victim is still in a victim mindset what you say even if you were trying to be encouraging can be taken as victim blaming. To that person I am sorry I did not word things in a compassionate way for it to resonate with you as I meant it to be. This journey I am on is to encourage and not bring people down especially more than they’re already down.
