We have nurtured these plants since April and they are finally starting to bloom šŸ˜

The June garden has a beautiful mix of spring flowers that start to fade as soon as it gets hot. Many people call these ā€œwild flowers.ā€

They do have a wild natural look to them.

Most are planted in the fall and late winter. These were never covered with frost cloth or grown under a tunnel. They naturally bloom in mid May thru June, around the same time as Peonies begin and Roses have their first flush.

We will have them for a few more weeks. šŸ’

Then it’s time for LISIANTHUS and DAHLIAS!

Dahlia Flower Feature: ā€˜Oreti Adele’

The bloom size is 4-6ā€ and looks best when harvested after opening.

This was our first dahlia to bloom in 2024. I love the golden details toward the center. These photos were taken in early July. Including Poppy swimming on the same day. She needed a break from the heat too 🄵

Our summer started out warmer than usual. Even though I pinched all our plants back earlier, I cut them back again at the end of June before they bloomed to keep them healthy in the heat. They also were under a 30% shade cloth for most of July.

Most of our dahlias are held back from blooming until the end of August. The others who can handle the heat start blooming mid July.

This one isn’t a fan of the high temps. I’m still gonna grow her, but maybe find a nice spot with afternoon shade this year with similar sized dahlias. I planted her next to a very tall dahlia - ā€˜Roque Starburst’ last season, the size was a little large for a next door neighbor.

I make notes all season about each plant, but it’s nice to have a notebook handy while diving tubers. I always have ideas while my hands are busy and I’m focused on something else.

Took a break from tuber diving today to prepare for an ice storm 🄶

After the storm, our temps are supposed to drop below zero at night. This is not an average winter low temperature for us.

Here is how I’m preparing:

I brought in any hoses that we were still using outside.

Greenhouse hoses disconnected. The houses are not heated. Secured all the spots cold air would be sneaking in.

I brought in old bath towels and rugs to the cooler shed. It has a space heater, but the power could go out, so I’m ready to cover all the dahlia tuber crates just in case. The rest of the dahlias are already potted and are waking up to be propagated. They are in the workshop which is heated, but not well insulated. I’ll add more space heaters around and add towels and cloths to the windows tomorrow.

I have lots of potted pansies and they went into the shed. They will be fine without sunshine for several days.

All rose pots went into the greenhouse under tables.

Added mounds of mulch to the base of all the roses outside. This took awhile šŸ˜… The canes may not survive, but the bases should be fine.

The storm is expected Sunday, so I have tomorrow to cover the greenhouse beds with frost cloth and get the workshop secure.

I’ll make a few videos tomorrow to show how I covered the roses.

Sitting warm by the fire now. Making lists for tomorrow.

How do you prepare for ice storms in your garden?

Time for the great divide!

Each year I approach this a little differently.

This time I divided half of the clumps when I dug them up. I was a little ruthless with who made the cut and who might not be viable. It was easy to work quickly because I could see the eyes pretty well.

We didn’t get a killing frost until after Thanksgiving so I had some extra time.

Here were the steps:

I cut down 2 rows at a time. (They are 25 ft long beds)

Did not water them. (It also didn’t rain much at the beginning of the month)

Waited a week and then gently lifted them out of the dry soil.

That was much different from years past when I was digging in the mud. The dry soil didn’t need to be sprayed with as much water, instead I mostly brushed it off.

I kept them in a shady spot outside and divided them all. I didn’t move on to the next bed until they were finished.

I let them dry outside over night with a light cloth over them.

Then they were stored in the cooler at 45 degrees in crates filled with wood chips (animal bedding).

The rest of my tubers had to be lifted, washed, relabeled and allowed to dry indoors. By this time, it was raining and the muddy clumps took too long to wash, so I didn’t have time to divide them.

Now, those are either going to be propagated in my workshop under grow lights or divided and held in the cooler which now has a heater on since it’s well below freezing at night. 🄶

Good luck to all of you who are hunched over growing their neck lumps for the next few months! Don’t forget to stretch. šŸ˜‰

Digging our last row of tubers this weekend. Somehow the cafes kept blooming even through the snow shower we got yesterday.

I will cut them back today and dig tomorrow or Sunday when the sun is out.

In the meantime, planting tulips, daffodils and peony roots. They don’t mind the cold at all šŸ˜‰

Cant wait to be inside by the fire getting our Thanksgiving menu ready!
