Today's plant of the Day: Aloe Vera
Aloe perfoliata.
There are over 650 species of Aloe! The most widely known is Aloe Vera or "True Aloe". Aloe is a succulent, which means they store water in their fleshy leaves, stems, or roots. This helps them survive in arid environments. They are native to Africa, the Arabian Peninsula, India, and Madagascar, but they're naturalized in places like Australia, Hawaii, and the Americas.
Aloes are mostly cultivated as ornamental plants in gardens and pots. Many are highly decorative and valued by collectors. However, Aloe can be used both medicinally (for burns, cuts and scrapes) and for cosmetic properties, like soaps, lotions and other skin products.
