📍 Gaston & Lincoln County + Greater Charlotte History behind Loray Mill:

Built in 1902 by John Love and George Gray, they contracted their names to Loray, and the mill, said to be the largest single roof textile mill in the South, went on to become a part of history. The Communist Textile Workers Union led

a strike in 1929 that laid siege to the town and resulted in the death of Gastonia Police Chief Orville Aderholt and worker's rights champion Ella May Wiggins. As public sentiment turned against the union and the Great Depression forced the company operating the mill into bankruptcy, Firestone Tire and Rubber Company stepped in and for the next 60 years produced woven tire cord for an exploding automobile industry. Fast-forward 20 years to April 2013 when the redevelopment of Loray Mill into a mixed-used property was green lighted & construction began to make a dream come true & bring history back to life.

Iconiq Moments is a Gastonia-based photo booth, photography, and videography company that we’ve absolutely grown to love working with. 📸✨

🎶 What a wonderful evening celebrating African American music at the African American Museum of History & Culture of Gaston County’s Celebration of African American Music!

A special thank you to the talented performers who made the evening unforgettable: Bettye Canada, Chriscynethia Floyd, Bruce Wiley, Stephanie Newman, and the Booker Wilson Band.

And to the artist who provided the piece, Rooted in Resilience, Tykevius McDowell. The piece will be on display in the museum beginning this week.

We are so very grateful to Director Dot Gutherie for inviting Caleb Sisk, Operations Director of Homesteads Events, to share about our continued partnership with the Museum through community programming, nonprofit galas and fundraising opportunities, and upcoming events like the End of Summer Reading Celebration featuring award-winning author Kelly Starling Lyons at Loray Mill.
