OPEN today Saturday, June 20, 8-4. What a lovely summer day! We still have a nice selection of Zinnias to help fill in those open spots of your garden. This tray is going home with me! I have a couple of areas that I am battling quack grass and perennials aren’t an option until I can get the quack grass under control. While I have removed as much of the quack grass and its wandering white roots as possible, these zinnias will fill in quickly and compete with the quack grass. In situations like this perennials will be quickly overtaken and impossibly tangled amongst the quack!

Shades of green! I will forever remember my first summer in this beautiful area that has become my home. As spring unfolded into summer I had never lived amongst such a lush green landscape. To this day, I am in awe. Sharing some of my favorite greens.

Don’t forget to add texture in the form of grasses and Lady’s Mantle, vegetables like kale and cabbage. Even asparagus can be incorporated into your garden’s! It doesn’t have to be planted in a row, a large clump is a great backdrop for other annuals and perennials. Everbearing Strawberries are beautiful in hanging baskets. Some varieties of blueberries make tidy fruitful landscape additions, often providing fall color as well. Purple Red Bor Kale is another nice addition! It can fill up a lot of space providing season long color, another nice low cost foliage backdrop that you can also use for a summer BLT sandwich! Another one of my old staples is annual Salvia Victoria Blue. I have used it for many years and never get tired of it!

Meet Proven Winners Elderberry ‘ Laced Up’. Perfect choice when you are in a tight spot. Does well in both sun or part shade and grows 6-10’ tall and only 2-4 wide. Beautiful pink flowers in early summer with dramatic dark foliage. I plan to use mine in a container this summer to be planted out in the fall.

Glorious rain!! There is nothing like the relief a good rain provides after a long, hot, dry spell. I’m sure many of our local farmers slept better these last few nights as well. Last night I discovered what I believe to be Blue Flag Iris blooming in my swamp. I had never noticed them before but recent changes made by removing large overhanging Box Elder trees have perhaps led to this nice grouping.
