The Story of Paws & Taws—Rockport/Fulton's Beloved Gathering Hall
Dating back to 1965, the original Paws & Taws—so named for the “male and female” partners of square-dancing—first opened as the community dance hall in Fulton, drawing over 300 dancers to its grand inaugural events.
For more than 50 years, it served as a hub for dances, weddings, meetings, and celebrations—becoming rooted in local tradition .
Though the hall was destroyed by Hurricane Harvey in 2017, such deep community roots inspired a full rebuild. In 2019, a new 7,600 sq ft facility broke ground—funded in part by FEMA grants—reviving a beloved venue even larger and more resilient.
Today, Paws & Taws at the Fulton Convention Center hosts everything from conservation dinners and festivals to community fundraisers and conferences—continuing a proud legacy of connection and celebration .
We are proudly dawning one of the orginal banners from Paws & Taws in our Artifacts: The Key to History exhibit!
