I have played live music for restaurants from San Diego up the Pacific Coast Highway to Orange County with a stop in Catalina Island. Going to Los Angeles, Ventura, and Santa Barbara. And throughout that whole area I have worked with many owners and managers and have been able to provide a music entertainment package that fits and feels right. Honestly it depends on the needs of the business as well as the budget. In my opinion an easy and cost effective set-up has two musicians. The next thing to consider is whether to include vocals or have it strictly instrumental, i.e. without vocals. In order to make that call it is best to put yourself in the shoes of the customer. Some places do just fine with a guitar two-piece. It may be a tough call and the only way to really know is to try out both options and go with what works best. Food, Drinks, and Live Music
The music style that I am known for is great for many types of settings from simple family gatherings to hotel restaurants. Yet I know it does not fit the dive bar on the corner of Crenshaw and Normandie. Oh well I can live with that. Now having said that, it may be a good idea to try it out if you feel it might suit the atmosphere of your establishment. An easy way to go is to start out small with just me and my set-up for one month. Honestly though, it does take a little more time for the new music to build a following. And the restaurant business is brutally competitive so if you have a little extra to offer, that may tip the scales in your favor and bring the crowd in. When going out to have a drink or a meal, people like to feel like they had a good time and by providing live music, it gives people a sense of satisfaction.
