One week until our Monarch Celebration, so here's something worth knowing before you come.

Every monarch tagged at our event carries a small, numbered sticker and a research contact. If that same butterfly is ever spotted again — sometimes hundreds or even a thousand miles away, in the exact mountain forests in Mexico where monarchs spend the winter — it helps scientists piece together how this migration actually works: which routes monarchs take, how fast they fly, and how many make it all the way there.

On October 10, your family can take part in that research firsthand. You'll tag and release a monarch of your own, watch a live tagging demonstration, and walk through fields of nectar-rich flowers that are fueling this year's migration on its way south. It's slow-paced, genuinely hands-on, and a favorite for all ages, from toddlers to grandparents.

The seeds are in the ground, and the rain is on its way.

We've just finished fall planting at Wildseed Farms, and tonight's rain is right on time. A good, steady soaking is the best thing that can happen to freshly sown wildflower seed. It presses the seed into the soil and gets it ready to root in over the cooler months. Every bluebonnet and Indian paintbrush you'll see in our fields next spring starts on a night like this one.

If you've been meaning to plant wildflowers at home, this week is a great time. Get your seed down ahead of the rain and let the weather do the rest.

Here's what's happening at our Monarch Celebration 🦋

On Saturday, October 10, monarchs will be passing through the Hill Country on their long trip to Mexico, and we're sending them off together. Here's how the day unfolds:

Tag your own monarch. Tagging begins at 11 am. You'll place a small tag on a live butterfly, the same kind researchers use to follow the migration.

Release it into our flower fields and watch it head south over the zinnias.

Learn about monarch conservation and what these travelers need along the way.

Stay and enjoy the day. Live music, food, shopping and plenty of spots for photos, all day long.

Butterfly packages are $30 and include your tag, the release and a sweet treat. Tickets are sold the day of the event at our plant stand.

Fall has settled in at Wildseed Farms 🌻

The zinnias are in full bloom along our walking trail, row after row of red, gold and pink, with butterflies drifting from flower to flower. Up at the farm, pumpkins and gourds in every shape and color are piled high, just waiting to go home with you.

Around every corner there's a spot for a photo. Pose with the pumpkins and hay bales, step into the flower fields, or strike a pose at our Selfie Station, tucked among ferns, fairies and a few friendly skeletons.

Little ones can chase butterflies down the trail and pick out the perfect pumpkin. Grown-ups can slow down in the gardens, browse the gift shop and nursery, and settle into the courtyard. Grandparents can take their time among the blooms. There's something here for every age.

Pack the family and make a day of it.

Just a friendly nudge as we get further into fall: the planting window here in the South doesn't stay open all season. Seed and live plants alike do best going into the ground before the first hard freeze, so if getting a fall bed started has been on your list, this is a good week to actually do it.

Since you'll likely be out here anyway — the pumpkins are in and the patch is fully stocked — consider making it a two-for-one trip. Grab your pumpkins for the porch, then swing through the seed room or the nursery before you head out. Everything you need for a fall planting is right here on the property.

It's Fall Festival day at Wildseed Farms, and the farm is full of families.

The pumpkin painting tables have been busy all morning (the drying station is filling up fast), the kids have taken over the hay bales, and there are bubbles floating through the courtyard. Our vendors are set up with plenty to browse, lunch is ready at the BrewBonnet Deli, and there's live music this afternoon.

If you're anywhere near Fredericksburg today, come on out and stay a while.

We've been hard at work, and the farm is all set for tomorrow's Fall Festival 🍂

It's been a true team effort, with a lot of heart (and a few hammers) from the talented designer behind all our fall displays.

Local vendors, kids' activities, family games, flowers in bloom, live music from The Frumkins, pumpkins, turkey legs and candy apples. The only thing missing is you.

Somewhere over Central Texas right now, a monarch butterfly is flying south on a journey that can stretch nearly 3,000 miles — all the way to a mountain forest in Mexico it has never seen before, using cues no one fully understands yet.

Every fall, that migration passes straight through the Texas Hill Country, and for one afternoon, it stops at Wildseed Farms.

Save the date: our Monarch Celebration returns Saturday, October 10. You and your family will get to watch monarchs tagged and released right in front of you, learn how researchers track their migration, and see the very wildflowers helping fuel that long trip south. It's the kind of afternoon that works for grandparents, parents, and kids all at once — no experience needed, just curiosity.

Fall Festival is this Saturday 🍂

Join us Saturday, September 26, starting at 11 am, for a full day of autumn in the Hill Country. Admission is free.

Stroll the artisan market and meet our local vendors, then pick out pumpkins and gourds in every shape and color, along with fresh fall décor for the porch and table. The Frumkins bring the live music. The kids can try pumpkin painting, face painting, the Scarecrow Scavenger Hunt, bubbles, co****le and family games. Come hungry for turkey legs and candy apples.

Out on the walking trail, cosmos, zinnias and sunflowers are adding their own fall color. Grab a drink and take the long way around.

Bring the whole family and plan to stay awhile.

Not everyone wants to wait on seed to sprout, and that's exactly what the nursery is for. Right now it's full of live perennials and native plants, already potted and growing, ready to be planted this fall.

Fall is actually the better time to do this than spring — the weather's milder, so there's less shock to a plant's system when it goes into the ground, and it gets all winter to put down roots before facing next summer's heat. Pick something that's already blooming, get it in the ground this weekend, and by next spring it'll look like it's always been there.

If you just want instant color for the porch instead of a whole bed, the hanging baskets and potted annuals out front are ready to go too — no waiting required either way.

We're at 100 Legacy Dr in Fredericksburg. Nursery hours are daily 10–6.
