💚 Meet Ms. Laura! 💚

We are excited to officially welcome Ms. Laura, COTA, to the Milestones team this summer!

Many of our families will have the opportunity to meet Ms. Laura this week as she begins seeing OT clients and supporting our summer programs.

I’ve known Laura for many years and previously had the opportunity to serve as her OT supervisor. She is a wonderful clinician, and I couldn’t be happier to have her working alongside our families.

☀️🏖️ BEACH WEEK IS HERE! 🏖️☀️

We’re excited to officially kick off our summer programming this week!

After a few bumps in the road this spring, we’re grateful to have found a way to bring our summer programs to life and can’t wait to welcome families for Beach Week.

Each week, we release a limited number of drop-in spaces in our Summer Enrichment Groups based on availability, and this week’s drop-ins are now open.

📍 Summer programs are currently being held at Fredericksburg Christian School.

From sensory play and process art to movement, music, outdoor exploration, and beach-themed adventures, we have a fun-filled week planned for children of all ages.

Sometimes the best “therapy tools” are already at home 🫶

Heavy work activities (also called proprioceptive input) help support regulation, body awareness, attention, coordination, and calming. And honestly… kids LOVE feeling helpful.

Mopping.
Window washing.
Scrubbing floors.
Pushing laundry baskets.
Helping carry and move things.

All of these activities provide meaningful input to muscles and joints while also supporting:
✨ core strength
✨ coordination
✨ endurance
✨ motor planning
✨ confidence
✨ independence

And at Milestones… apparently helping prep the new space counts too 😂

One of our favorite things about child-led learning is that regulation and strengthening often happen naturally through real-life experiences 💛

In addition to therapy services and our monthly enrichment groups, Milestones is offering flexible summer group options for families looking for playful, therapist-informed experiences without a full monthly commitment ☀️

This summer we’re offering:

✨ Monday indoor play drop-ins

✨ Friday Play & Stay sessions

✨ School-aged adaptive music group options

From music and movement to sensory play, pretend play, and themed activities — each week brings something a little different to explore ✨

Our groups are designed to support connection, creativity, regulation, communication, confidence, and play through meaningful child-led experiences 🌿

Options are available for ages 0–5+ depending on the group.

Appointments are required and drop-in spots are based on availability.

Big news in the pediatric world this week 💛

The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released updated guidance emphasizing that recess and unstructured play are not ‘extra’ — they are essential for healthy child development.

The updated recommendations highlight benefits for:
✨ emotional regulation
✨ attention and learning
✨ social development
✨ mental health
✨ physical health
✨ stress reduction

As pediatric therapists, this is something we see every single day.

Children learn through movement.
Children regulate through connection and play.
And many skills develop best in meaningful, real-life environments — not just seated at a table.

This philosophy has always been at the heart of Milestones Play Gym & Pediatric Therapy.

As we continue building spaces that support child-led play, movement, connection, and regulation… this reminder feels especially important tonight. 🤍

One thing we knew we wanted to change right away in the new space… lighting ✨

Harsh fluorescent lighting can feel overstimulating and exhausting — especially for children who are already working hard to process their environment.

As we build this new Milestones space, we’re being intentional about creating softer, calmer, more sensory-friendly environments for the children and families we serve 🤍

Even small details can make a big difference.
