Here’s how we created a lush, 100% foam-free ceremony framing the National Mall that was completely freestanding on the DAR Constitution Hall portico.

Historic venues mean strict preservation rules: no affixing mechanics to stone columns, no water damage risk, and zero room for error.

To keep these arrangements secure on an outdoor, elevated portico, we created freestanding metal stands with reusable vases and chicken wire support for the stems. Despite being fully exposed to the elements, every stem stayed hydrated and secure and 100% floral foam-free⁠!

We brought the client’s vision to life using ch*****ne and blush colored roses with pops of mauve/plum to complement the timeless marble backdrop.

Found some REALLY cool, biodegradable water tubes, bamboo cardettes and bouquet wraps!

Check out Terry Doyle! Their tubes and bags are made from bagasse, which is a pulpy, fibrous residue leftover from sugarcane processing. So not only does it biodegrade in 18-24 months, it is a sustainable source because it’s made from the byproduct of something we are already doing! 15 minutes of hard(ish) labor for 45 grams of plastic. 💀

I’m always looking for ways to reduce waste in the studio, especially with soft #5 PP plastic film (which we currently pay to mail away for specialized recycling). So, I decided to try making Ecobricks!

For those who don’t know, Ecobricks are plastic bottles stuffed ridiculously dense with soft plastics so they can be used as literal building blocks. 🧱

There is a formula for it, but for my 500ml bottle, it needed to weigh 165g to be dense enough for construction.

My result: 15 minutes of jamming plastic in with a stick, feeling like a champion... only to put it on the scale and see 44 grams. FORTY. FOUR🫠

Turns out, big scrunched-up pieces leave hidden air pockets, and packing these things takes serious muscle. There is definitely a learning curve here, but unless I find a way to donate bulk plastic for other people to stuff, this might not be the single studio solution I hoped for. Whomp whomp.

Listen, custom floral design, mood boards, and line-by-line proposals take real time and energy. I do it happily because it’s how I connect with my amazing clients! And look—if I’m outside your budget, or you fell in love with another florist’s vibe, THAT IS FINE. This is business!

But ghosting after receiving a custom proposal revision? It’s just rude. 🙃
A 10-second email saying, “Hey Blair, thanks for your time but we went another direction!” is all it takes. It lets me release your date to another couple and saves us both from awkward follow-up emails. Treat your vendors like actual human beings!
