Combing through the archives and compiled some of my favorite production stills with some cool folks, from the early aughts till now. Indie movies to national television spots, super 16mm to 4k, it’s been a long and winding road!

Shooting production stills for friends’ movies in art school was the first time I was paid to take photos. Well, I was really only compensated for film and developing costs. But it was the start of doing what I love even if I couldn’t scrape together film money!

I shot everything on Kodak bw400cn in those days, because I didn’t need a pro lab to process it and could not yet turn the work around fast enough by developing and printing my own film.

I shot on K1000s and ME Supers with 50 and 28mm lenses and loved moving around sets wordlessly looking for compelling angles and moments.

Our professor (Fito, in the last shot here), was kind enough to play a menacing mad scientist for us but died tragically in a car accident a short time later. My photos were used for his celebration of life and it was then that I first got a sense how important it was to take photos.

My college buddies have grown up to produce and manage recognizable networks and programs and art exhibits.

It all seems like so long ago but I’m immediately transported back to those ambitious times when I thumb through these old photos.

In my 20’s, I hung out and took rehearsal photos of my friend Joey’s band, Sky Blue Baby. I used a Pentax K1000, 50/1.7, Kodak 400CN and a monopod. During their break, we dropped the film off for processing, got lunch and picked up 4x6’s and scans. I still enjoy listening to their music today and thinking about that time in my life when the world looked so vast and accessible.

Super entertaining!
