Bottom line we just need to do better for people, especially women and take their mental health issues seriously. We need to make sure that people are!being helped and not harmed because of the stigma attached to being mentally ill. If the mentally ill receive the same kind of care and attention that cancer patients do, I say this as a cancer survivor. I think weâd have a lot less stories like Lindsayâs and my sisterâs.
Like Lindsay, my sister could mask her mental health struggles, because my sister loved working, she wanted to be useful, she wanted to be just like everybody else. She hated having a mental illness. She hated having her life interrupted and destroyed by this disease over and over again.
Also, like Lindsay, my sister was put on tons of medication. They were always changing. After she passed away, I found her medication list and it was two pages long. My sister unalived herself when she was 50 years old and supposedly being cared for by the Massachusetts Department of mental help, but thatâs another story for another day.
