Had a great talk with my buddy Chris J Norwood on his podcast THE STRANGEST GIG. We discussed my most memorable awful gig playing on dirty 6th st in to the ass end of a puppet show ( and Toby Pipes) at a pirate bar.

We discuss new Cut Throat Finches album UNRAVELED release coming out in May, The Nancys first show coming at Spune Presents The Third Annual Southside Spillover | Tulips FTW on Sunday Mar 17 (changed since interview) discussed strategy to reach wider audience, bring them into the music scene, the challenges with bars, etc. I also propose a paradigm shift in musician thinking on what is “selling out”.

So many discussions I have had over the last two months about the music scene, specifically those playing and writing original music in this town/ DFW. The questions are the same in Dallas, the questions are the same in Austin, and the common thread to every bar that features original music is that none of them are doing great at best, or have had to close their doors completely, and I think there are more coming soon. TABC #’s are public. If I was a bar owner trying to feed my family, I would feature Tribute bands because that is what most really want and are willing to pay for and more importantly, people are connected to it. They are not connected to local original music. As a musician, I believe at this point the problem is accessibility to our music, and we are not giving potential fans many options other than a late night bar with parking problems to come see us. Will we become one gigantic Applebee’s littered with Thomas Kincaid paintings? Or will we be a city of local family restaurants and small businesses, artists that create a lasting culture partnered with a community that we have found ways to connect to?

Great article Steve. It was actually a post from Carey Wolff that got me thinking on this. I think it’s exactly how I feel and I’m truly bummed about it, ok pi**ed off, but I also think you are dead on about new young bands needing a base of support. All the talk in city council regarding “the arts” in the city could sure use some funds or grants set aside for music here. We need rehearsal space, grants to record, to promote, the city to promote, and would it kill some local businesses to put our stuff on repeat?

Also, if I get L on left hand, do I get in free at Lola’s for life?
