People often ask why florist flowers cost more than supermarket bouquets — and it’s a completely reasonable question. The simple answer is that when you buy from a florist, you’re paying for far more than just the flowers. You’re investing in craftsmanship, care, time, and professional experience. Every arrangement is individually designed by hand with attention to balance, colour, and purpose — not assembled on a production line.
Florists source flowers thoughtfully and in smaller quantities, selecting specific varieties for their quality, longevity, and suitability for each design. Rather than purchasing in bulk at the lowest possible price, we choose blooms that will create the best overall result. Each stem is carefully conditioned, prepared, and arranged properly to ensure it looks beautiful and lasts as long as possible.
There is also a great deal of unseen work behind every bouquet. Early mornings at flower markets, conditioning stock, wiring and taping, cleaning and trimming stems, building internal mechanics, designing, and carefully packaging arrangements all take time and skill. Added to this are shop overheads, refrigeration costs, natural wastage, and years of professional training and experience — all of which contribute to delivering flowers that are perfect for the occasion.
Supermarket flowers are produced for speed and volume, and are often sold at very low margins — sometimes even as a loss leader to encourage additional purchases. Florist flowers, by contrast, are created for meaningful moments: celebrations, expressions of love, sympathy, and remembrance. Choosing a florist means supporting a skilled craft, a small independent business, and a level of personal service that simply cannot be replicated on a shelf.
To everyone who supports independent florists — thank you. Your choice truly makes a difference.
