Fun Fact Friday!
Zinnias are one of those amazing summer flowers that you have started to see in your gardens and in our bouquets. Did you know that Zinnias will become a branching flower and give you many more blooms if you pinch the tops off when they are about 5 to 6 inches tall? You can also cut off the first bloom if you miss your opportunity, and the 2nd and 3rd blooms will be bigger and better!

Did you also know that Zinnias should be given the wiggle test before you cut them to bring them inside for a bouquet? Grab the stem about 6 inches below the flower and wiggle it. If the flower stem is not rigid, and it wiggles, it is not ready and will "melt" in an arrangement or in a vase. Wait for that stem to be stiff when you wiggle, and that flower will give you maximum vase life! Come on, wiggle it! You know you want to! Lol

We are new to flower farming. Currently in our second year, we have learned a lot since year one, but we are in awe of what we still do not know. Everything I have learned is by listening to and following other flower farms, and Three Acre Farm is one of those amazing sites. If you do not follow them, you should! I had a really good friend ask me where all the flowers were when she visited. I told her they were in the cooler. If you see a lot of flowers on a flower farm, you are not a very good flower farmer. September has arrived, marking the beginning of one of the busiest periods on our flower farm. We will be occupied preparing beds for planting hardy annuals. They will go in those beds and into the hoophouse starting in October. Although we still have an abundance of summer flowers and will continue to provide those beauties to you each week, as they conclude blooming, the soil will be prepped and ready to receive the annuals. This allows them to develop robust root systems throughout the winter and burst into bloom when spring arrives.

It's time to say goodbye to Rose Lilys for the year. Our rose lilys are grown in crates and the crates must be readied for the tulip season. Bulbs will be arriving in October. The crates are prepared with fresh soil and topped with locally sourced compost from Hemmingsen Contracting Co. Can't wait for tulips in the spring!

Fun Fact Friday!

Alstroemeria is the topic of discussion. Known as the Peruvian lily or lily of the Incas, it's actually a member of the Amaryllidaceae family, not the lily family. These hardy perennials can tolerate some shade, but they produce flowers best in full sun. In zone 9b, they come back annually. We've allocated a whole cut bed to these lovely flowers. The most interesting aspect is their harvesting method. They grow 4 to 5 feet tall from a cluster. To harvest, simply pull from the bottom, and they pop right out! The more you harvest the more flowers they produce. Their remarkable vase life makes them perfect for bouquets. Keep an eye out for them this Saturday!
