Looking forward to welcoming the #12 to the Yosemite Jazz Train in 2026!
Shay #12 is coming home to California!
On Tuesday, January 20th, a successful hydrostatic test was performed on Shay #12 and it passed with flying colors under the supervison of Bob Becker with the State of Colorado. Thank you to the team at the Colorado Railroad Museum for their assistance in the shop.
The locomotive is being prepared to move to Fish Camp to join her West Side sisters #10 & #15 at the Yosemite Mountain Sugar Pine Railroad. A complete restoration will be done to return her to active service. A special locomotive house is being constructed to care for the engine.
A special thank you goes out to the people behind the scenes to make this happen, Lindsey and Rosa Ashby, Mark Greksa, Phil Johnson, and Jeff Taylor. You are all part of our railroad family and we appreciate your efforts to make this a reality. We look forward to welcoming Phil Reader, Jeff Badger, and Steve Butler this spring when the restoration effort is underway.
Shay #12 was built in April 1926 for the Swayne Lumber Company and eventually ended up at the West Side Lumber Company. It is a superheated three truck Shay with a weight of 60 tons. It is our hope to have #12 in service this season to help celebrate her 100th birthday!
We look forward to see you this upcoming season when we reopen on March 28th.
