12 Angry Men
Produced by Twin Falls Theatre Collective
Directed by Daniel Gardner
Fans of live theatre know that, sometimes, the most extraordinary of productions take place in the most unlikely of places. But…Filer, Idaho?
If you love live theatre, this is for you. But if you are a fan of crime drama (real or not), unique experiences, the original Henry Fonda movie (or 1990s remake), or getting out of the house (but not for too long), this is also, most definitely, for you.
Twin Falls Theatre Collective’s production of 12 Angry Men clocks in at 90 minutes, start to finish, with no intermission. Yet the time, carefully calculated by the clock on the wall, seemingly flies as the audience becomes caught up in the real-time, one-room setting of a hot, cramped, 1950s jury room. A murder trial for a teenager has just taken place, and the jury must decide, unanimously, whether to convict or acquit. The jury room is tense. It is emotional. Tempers flare.
Each of the 12 men comes with his own story, his own opinions, and his own personal principles. The vote changes, more than once or twice, or even three times. The anger is real. The promise of resolution seems impossible as reasonable doubt is called into question, time and again. Will they reach a verdict, or will it be a hung jury? Even if you know the story, the suspense of this particular production is still very, very real.
Simply put, the acting is stellar. Director Daniel Gardner, is to be commended as he has assembled the ideal cast. It is, quite literally, impossible to single out any particular actor, as this troupe is a true ensemble with no weak links. Kudos to the jurors (in order by number): Brendan Rowlands, Reilly Hoy, Mike Etcheverry, Chris Ayers, Colin McBride, Rick Box, Dale Laughlin, Tim Yenne, Andy Fink, Dylan Hyde, C.R. Call, and Matthew Durand. Even on opening night, the conversational yet contentious feel of the dialogue was natural. Every actor held his own, knew his part, and contributed to a most dynamic delivery. They supported one another so cohesively that everyone shone. I can only imagine how spectacular they will be when they close this show.
But the absolutely incredible attention to detail in this production must be equally credited. The costumes and hand props are spot-on. The set is simple yet effective, from the jury table and chairs to the (sometimes working) fan in the corner, to the dim, ceiling lights and water cooler with cone-shaped cups. Add in the time-period accurate photo of the supreme court justices and original Eisenhower portrait by local artist, Karin Asselstine. Even the snacks for sale were time-period appropriate!
However, most notably, this small theatre space has been completely transformed into the jury room: the floor and the walls have been painted to match, working windows with city landscape have been installed, and doors have been labeled as “Jury Room” and “Bathroom”. The audience is right there, in the jury room, inches away from the actors and it is glorious.
What Twin Falls Theatre Collective is accomplishing in Filer, Idaho is astonishing. If you have not yet experienced the immersive, intimate storytelling experience one of their productions offers, hesitate no more.
