Get to know your septic system.

It’s easy to forget about what’s going on underground but good knowledge and a dedication to maintenance can save a lot of headaches in the future.

* Don't flush trash: Never flush wipes (even if labeled "flushable"), paper towels, feminine products, or cat litter.
* Don't pour grease down drains: Keep cooking oils and fats out of the sink because they solidify and cause clogs.
* Don't use harsh chemicals: Avoid pouring strong bleach, antibacterial additives, or chemical drain openers down the drain, as they kill the good bacteria needed to break down waste.
* Don't drive on the drain field: Keep cars, trucks, and heavy equipment off the soil to prevent crushing underground pipes.
* Don't plant trees nearby: Keep large trees and shrubs away from the system so roots do not crack the tank or clog the pipes. �
* Don't use garbage disposals heavily: Limit or avoid garbage disposals, which add excess solid food waste to the tank.

Every September, SepticSmart Week serves as a great reminder to properly care for your on-site septic system. Take action this year by joining our next in-person homeowner inspection training on Wednesday, September 16, from 10 am to 12 pm at the Ferndale WECU! Taking this training certifies you to inspect your own system, fulfill reporting requirements, and qualify for rebates that lower the cost of maintenance, pumping, and evaluations. This annual 5K Fun Run is free and enjoyable for the whole family, and welcomes people of all speeds. Check-in opens at 8:30 AM on September 12th, the Smolt Sprint, for racers under 10, starts at 9:30, and the 5K begins at 10AM. Register at: bit.ly/RWTC26-Reg
