Michelle and Scott Ellermets, from the Washington, D.C., area, both experienced heartbreaking losses in 2023. Each had unexpectedly lost a spouse they had been married to for more than 20 years.

Michelle’s husband, Jonathan, whom she had been married to for more than 23 years, died from a heart attack in January 2023. Just five months later, in June, Scott’s wife, Lisa, died after an illness. Scott and Lisa had been married for 29 years.

Later that year, in December, Michelle and Scott connected through a local Facebook group for widows and widowers. Their connection was unexpected. Scott had noticed that Michelle was Facebook friends with his sister, which helped bring them together.

As they spent more time talking, their friendship grew into something more. Despite the pain they had both experienced, they found comfort and happiness in each other.

On September 7, 2024, Michelle and Scott got married on a beach in North Carolina’s Outer Banks. Their wedding day was already special, but something beautiful happened just moments before the ceremony.

After a day of rain, a bright double rainbow suddenly appeared in the sky. The couple stood beneath the colorful rainbow as they prepared to begin their new life together.

Wedding photographer Chelsea Schaefer captured the emotional moment and later shared a video of it on TikTok. The video quickly spread online and was viewed nearly 4 million times.

For Michelle and Scott, the rainbow became a beautiful moment during a day that marked a new beginning after tremendous loss.
