The 1960s made the afro a symbol. Now, we keep the legacy alive. Back then, rocking your natural hair was bold. It meant pride. It meant protest. It meant saying “I know who I am and I won’t shrink for anyone.” Today, people are still carrying that torch through curls, braids, locs, fades, twists, and edges laid just right.
This Juneteenth, we’re celebrating the roots and how the next generation is reimagining what freedom looks like.

1960s knocking on your door today.

The BlowOut Afro became a staple of the 1960s often credited to by activists Angela Davis as it was a symbol for a rejection of societies beauty standards and power in self identity. See the full installation at Juneteenth to learn more about Black Hairstory.
