Come and try some of our Cape Verdean dishes! 🙂
The Mashpee Inclusion and Diversity Committee (MIDC) is hosting its sixth annual Race Amity Day on Sunday, June 14. This year, they’ve made changes to further refine the community event.
“A lot of people don’t recognize that the word ‘amity’ is ‘friendship,’ and also, some people think it’s a road race. We want to respect the Race Amity Day because it’s all over the state,” committee chairwoman J. Marie Stevenson told the Enterprise on May 14. Stevenson explained that the headline of this year’s event is “Friendship Festival,” with the subheader of “on Race Amity Day.”
Resident Richard Donovan told the Enterprise that he and his wife, Theresa Donovan, brought a Race Amity Day exhibition to the Mashpee Public Library seven years ago.
“The first year, my wife and I had a little exhibition at the library. It wasn’t adopted by the Mashpee Inclusion & Diversity Committee until the following year,” he told the Enterprise. "It’s a statement,” he said. “It’s a proclamation of unity.”
He said that Race Amity Day originated from the Baha’i Faith, a religion founded in 19th-century Iran, with Baha’is of the United States hosting the first official multi-racial, interfaith gathering more than 50 years ago.
