Out here checking peonies five times a day. That’s not an exaggeration. They open quickly in this weather and if I want them at the right stage I gotta check often!

What’s the right stage? Flower farmers call it marshmallow stage. Because when you squeeze the bud it should be squishy like a marshmallow.

The sticky sap they release adds to the marshmallow experience!

Harvesting at the right stage is important as it gets you the longest base life possible!

Flower Focus Friday! A series.

This season I’d like to share what my eyes get to see as I walk the farm. My camera roll is full of “the prettiest flower” in the field. But they rarely get shared. So this is my attempt at fixing that. Enjoy the suspense as I walk up to the prettiest flower I found this week.

As I was checking peony buds for harvest I found this (not so) little gem tucked inside the peony bush, completely bloomed. I think it looks like a little flower nest, what do you think?!

And yes this one was cut and brought inside for me to enjoy!

Those that know me, know that right before these recordings was a loud scream (sorry neighbors).

I’ll never get used to working alongside these guys 🐍, but I do appreciate their help with pests!

This little friend had been hiding in the silage tarp that I folded up and bear hugged as I carried it down the hill to its new spot. I do appreciate him waiting to move until I put the tarp down though.

Luckily this happens once a year and now I can relax!
