Confused by these lilac bushes! We didn’t get many blooms from them this spring, but imagine my surprise when we had buds on the bushes in September and now (small) blooms.

Farming in Rochester, NY (home of the Rochester Lilac Festival ) you would think I’d have an answer to this, but I’m stumped! I’m assuming it’s weather confusion or a stressed plant?

Taking suggestions for how to care for them to set them up for success in the spring!

Friday Field Focus… eucalyptus!

I still have some experimenting I want to do with growing eucalyptus in Rochester, but still proud of the stems I e been able to put out into the community!

Many of you have been following along, but for those that are new here. I overwintered my 2025 eucalyptus and have been cutting from it this season. Essentially, I grew it all 2025, cut it for bouquets and weddings, then protected it as best I could from the elements all winter long, before letting it grow tall and strong again in 2026.

I also planted need seedlings for 2026 just in case, and now I have an abundance! But I don’t think there’s such thing as too much eucalyptus! What do you think??

Tagging the dahlias is officially done. I don’t have a “last dahlia” picture because I finished in the dark, after scaring the deer away from our hopeful pumpkin patch. I was chatting with my sister though, maybe she will vouch for me.

This process is extremely important. Very soon, I will begin the digging process for these tubers. They will get stored in crates all winter long. The only way to ensure I know what flower will come from each tubers is to stay very organized. Beginning with wrapping this flagging tape with the name of the variety written on it around each plant. I will also label each crate as they go into storage. This ensures I know what I’m planting and what tubers I’m providing for customers in the spring (hint hint 😉).

Field Focus Friday… DAHLIAS!!

Figured it was about time they get the focus. They are the star of the show this time of year.

The colors, the petal shape, the sizes, the groups. I could stare at them for hours.

I love when people learn that they are real and all these different ones are still considered dahlias.

No matter your color preference or vibe, dahlias check off every box! What’s your favorite variety? Is there one you wish we grew?

They will be in every bouquet at the market tomorrow!!
