August 13, 1973 🎸 Lynyrd Skynyrd arrived... and Southern rock would never be the same.

On this day in 1973, Lynyrd Skynyrd released their debut album, (Pronounced 'Lĕh-'nérd 'Skin-'nérd). And what a debut it was!

Most bands would be thrilled to have one song from their first album become a classic. Skynyrd gave us "Gimme Three Steps," "Simple Man," "Tuesday's Gone," and, of course, "Free Bird"—all on the same record. "Free Bird" in particular helped push the Jacksonville, Florida band onto the national stage.

The album captured everything that would make Skynyrd so special: Ronnie Van Zant's unmistakable storytelling, three-guitar firepower, blues, country, and straight-ahead Southern rock. It sounded like the South—and it sounded completely different from what was dominating the radio at the time.

And there's a great piece of nostalgia attached to that famous album cover. The photograph of the band was taken on Main Street in Jonesboro, Georgia, giving the record an authentic, small-town Southern backdrop that fit the music perfectly.

The album eventually sold more than a million copies and became one of the defining records of the Southern rock era.

Think back to 1973... vinyl spinning on the turntable, the album cover sitting next to the stereo, and that first time you heard the opening notes of "Free Bird."
