Almost 20 years ago, in 2007, I took my Every Child Can and Suzuki Book One teacher training after I had finished my freshman year of college. Today, I completed my training for Books 9 and 10. It’s been a wild journey, and some days I feel very Suzuki and other days I don’t, but I am so grateful for everything I’ve learned and the encouragement of my teacher trainer to take what I’ve learned and use in a way that makes the most sense for me and my students. I am grateful to have even more tools in my teacher toolkit - I can teach “Suzuki” for really little kids, but I can also do scales and etudes all day long to help build a solid advanced technique. For most of my students I find a blend that works best for them.

So what’s next? I’m taking a violin and Timani class this month, and then, well, who knows? That’s the beauty. I don’t know what I don’t know yet, but I’m excited to find out.

Perfectionism - and a noisy mind - are conditions that seem to affect a lot of musicians, particularly violinists. That being the case, I'm not sure if I was looking for help with my teaching or with my own mental state when I attended a session called "Supporting Perfectionists in the Private Studi...

Harmonic Justice: Freedom in Music explores the idea of music as a tool for creative expression and social change, and asks, "What inspires engaging performances?" Join National Philharmonic musicians, guest artists, and community members on March 6th at 6:30 PM at Busboys and Poets in Takoma Park for an evening of casual conversation and thought-provoking connection around the theme of freedom in music.

Grab a drink and a bite while NatPhil guest conductor Naima Burrs and concert leader Dr. Laura Colgate (also BI's Executive Director) spark a lively discussion about how music can make us feel free, using the themes and stories behind NatPhil's upcoming concerts as a guide. Share your thoughts, meet fellow music lovers, and be a part of the dialogue that brings performances to life.
