Polar Peonies, LLC started as a bud of an idea in 2001. Cold, wet, northwest facing permafrost soils are not (and should not be) the first choice for prime agriculture land, but we it's what we already owned and were willing to give it a try. In Fall 2001, we cleared the black spruce forest to carve out a field. By pushing tree berm piles along perimeter of the field, we hoped for some deterrent f

or wandering moose (they don’t eat the peonies but they can destroy IRT/drip tape and dig up roots)
In spring 2002, we started work on the fields (this is an ongoing, never ending process). We planted 20 assorted peony varieties as a test row, and then add a few more in 2003, and a few more in 2004. Each year, working the soil - to help warm, dry and enrich what we had. Finally, in Spring 2005, we took the plunge and planted 2,000 roots. Since then, we have added more, and expanded our field. We still have less than an acre in production, but you would be amazed at how many peonies you can plant to the acre . . . Visitors are always welcome, especially if you can weed - give us a call and we'll give you a tour.

One small gesture can mean the world . . . a young boy of 4 or 5 years old saw that his neighbor had been sad for a few days. He remembered that his mother took flowers to others in their sadness so he thought he could do the same. He didn't have any money, so he couldn't get flowers from the shop his mother frequented, but he had seen something pretty by the back fence.

With a bashful smile on his face, and a handful of yellow flowers, the young boy walked up to his neighbor's porch. The elderly gentleman looked up and smiled, for he appreciated the boy's efforts and intentions. For even though the yellow flowers were w**ds, he understood that he wasn't alone because someone cared.

Flowers don't have to be a grand gesture only for special occasions, a simple flower can brighten someone's day more than you know.
