This will be my last Demi-arch for awhile as I am scheduled for carpal tunnel surgery on both hands starting tomorrow. Years of tying hundreds of thousands of balloons has caught up with me. I’m considering retiring for good, but have not fully made up my mind. It has been a fun ride these past many years.
I started what I believe was the first balloon company in Evansville about ten years ago just so I could make a little extra money for golf, and had no idea how things would progress. At that time, you rarely heard of balloon columns and arches and especially organic sculptures. People mostly bought helium-filled balloons, but with helium shortages and the need to have helium available for more important uses, I opted for only air-filled creations.
I have enjoyed learning new ways to create sculptures and trying to accommodate my clients’ wishes. Every job has been different and some very challenging, but seeing the finished product has always amazed me. I have met so many wonderful people and visited so many different neighborhoods and learned so much. Now the industry has grown so much that you see balloons of some type everywhere! I am proud to be a part of this creative community and to think that I had a small part in balloons becoming so popular. I have always loved this job and that is why it is so hard to just quit. If I were younger, there is no doubt that I would continue, but the time may have come for me to move on. We will see what happens!
