Cyndi is the new president of Eureka Woman's Club. She is very active in a number of community civic groups, including Lions, and very deserving of this award. . Cyndi is treasurer of the McKinleyville Lions Club, was recently honored as the “Lion of the Year.”

The Lion of the Year Award is a prestigious recognition awarded by Lions Clubs to a member who demonstrates exceptional service, dedication and leadership above and beyond their standard duties. This award honors individuals who exemplify the spirit of community service.

In presenting the award, Nancy Henley, McKinleyville Lions Club vice president, said “In terms of lion symbolism, Cyndi represents all things: loyalty, devotion, positivity, courage, kindness, strength and a fierce work ethic.”

Members of the Trinidad Lions Club and Bainbridge’s family joined McKinleyville club members for a presentation of an engraved vase and roses.

Bainbridge has been a Lion club member for 23 years and is lead organizer for such local Lion events as the December “Winter Express” program for young children choosing holiday gifts, a “Student Speaker Contest” for high school students and free vision screenings in area schools each year for some 700 to 1,000 students.

Gifts of appreciation celebrating our 125th year. Every month a different organization. So much good work going on in Humboldt

CASA of Humboldt is beyond honored to share some exciting news!

We have been selected as the June recipient of a donation from the Eureka Woman's CLUB — and this year is extra special, as they are celebrating their incredible 125th anniversary.

Their generous gift will go directly toward our Youth Activity Fund, ensuring that every young person who comes to visit the CASA House has access to snacks and feels truly welcome the moment they walk in the door. For children navigating the foster care system, those small moments of warmth and belonging matter more than we can say.

Thank you, Eureka Woman's Club. We are so grateful, and so proud to be part of this community alongside you!

Equality for all💜

The 19th Amendment was passed by both houses of Congress in 1919, which began the state ratification process that would lead to the Amendment's certification in the Constitution on August 26, 1920.

But the battle for women's right to vote didn't end there. While it represented a major victory for the movement after nearly 70 years of activism, the 19th Amendment did not simply grant universal suffrage for all women.

Native American women were not considered US citizens until 1924, but until as late as 1962, individual states still prevented them from voting.

Asian American immigrant women were excluded from voting until the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952 allowed them to gain citizenship.

Black women faced Jim Crow-era barriers like poll taxes, voter ID requirements, and acts of violence that threatened their ability to cast a ballot until the Voting Rights Act of 1965.

Latina women faced literacy tests and other language-based setbacks that prevented them from voting until a 1975 extension of the Voting Rights Act.

As we celebrate this monumental achievement for women, we also recognize that only some of the women who fought for suffrage were able to exercise their newly-won right to vote. Despite being some of the movement's fiercest advocates, suffragists like Mabel Ping-Hua Lee, Zitkála-Šá, and Luisa Capetillo could not cast their first ballots in the 1920 election because of their race.

Today, we honor the women who not only fought for the 19th Amendment's passage, but also after it, as their efforts on behalf of their communities paved the way for the freedoms of all American women.

The Eureka Woman’s Club recently installed its 2026–2027 Executive Board during a special luncheon and ceremony at its historic Eureka clubhouse. Pictured from left are Amanda Kunze, Angelica Taggart, Suzanne Dockal, Noelle Marak, Renee Burnett, Sue Tatro, Susan Bicknell, Carole Crossley, new president Cyndi Bainbridge and Murline Georgeson, outgoing president.

The event marked both a leadership transition and the continuation of the club’s 125th anniversary year celebration. Members and guests gathered for a catered luncheon followed by an installation ceremony themed “Passing the Torch,” recognizing both the club’s long history of service and its commitment to continuing community leadership into the future.

Outgoing President Murline Georgeson reflected on the accomplishments of the past year and thanked members for their dedication, volunteerism and support. She expressed appreciation for the many projects completed during the year, including ongoing fundraising for the club’s kitchen remodel project, community service initiatives, educational programs and the club’s “Gifts of Appreciation” campaign benefiting local nonprofit organizations.

Cyndi Bainbridge was installed as president for the upcoming term. Other officers installed included First Vice President and Program Director Amanda Kunze, Recording Secretary Angelica Taggart, Corresponding Secretary Noelle Marak, Treasurer Ellen Coats, Financial Secretary Suzanne Dockal, House Directors Sue Tatro and Susan Bicknell, Rental Director Renee Burnett, Ways and Means Director Carole Crossley and Strategic Planning Director Susan Bicknell.

The ceremony emphasized the importance of volunteer service, leadership and the preservation of the legacy of one of Humboldt County’s oldest community organizations, Georgeson said. Members participated in symbolic presentations highlighting the passing of knowledge, responsibility and commitment from one generation of leaders to the next.

The luncheon featured elegant decorations, music, flowers and commemorative touches honoring the club’s milestone anniversary. Members also celebrated the friendships and collaborative spirit that continue to define the organization after 125 years of service.

Founded in 1901, the Eureka Woman’s Club has long supported cultural, educational and charitable programs throughout the community. The organization is affiliated with the California Federation of Women’s Clubs and the General Federation of Women’s Clubs.

Georgeson says the club looks forward to an active year ahead, including anniversary celebrations, community outreach projects, fundraising events and continued work toward modernization of the historic clubhouse kitchen facility.

The Eureka Woman’s Club was already a decade old when the first class graduated from Humboldt with 15 women in the graduating class.

On this day, 111 years ago, the first graduating class of Cal Poly Humboldt celebrated their commencement at the historic Minor Theatre. All 15 women who received their certificates that day paved the way for those who followed! 🎓

PS: The school back then was called Humboldt State Normal School!
