Garden Visions Landscape Design

Garden Visions Landscape Design Garden Visions Landscape Design has been providing a full-range of landscape design services throughout Humboldt County for 11 years.

I envision this page as a place to share my thoughts about plants, landscape design, gardening books, and miscellaneous garden musings ~ as the spirit moves me. I take pride in designing landscapes that reflect an in-depth understanding of the site as well as the client's needs and interests. I work in a number of different landscape styles, but my goal is always the same: to create landscapes with four-season interest that are both beautiful and functional.

ORNAMENTAL GRASS. I visited the Humboldt Botanical Garden yesterday and spotted this specimen of one of the most colorful ornamental grasses--Pink Muhly (Muhlenbergia capillaris). A great example of why grasses are valuable landscape plants.

AUTUMN CHEER. With the current blackouts and wildfires, I thought we all might need something cheerful to contemplate. Here's yellow African Daisies in a blue pot in front of Pineapple Sage with its red blossoms. In the lower right corner, the colorful fall foliage of a Blueberry bush.

ITHURIEL'S SPEAR. One of the showiest of our native bulbs, multiple clumps of these striking blue-violet flowers are blooming now in my yard. A friend gave me some bulbs (actually corms) several years ago, and they have done very well.

MY FRONT YARD. On these cold, grey, wet days, it's a real treat to open my front door and see these glowing Red-Hot Pokers--like a blaze of golden sunshine!

GROWING WILDFLOWERS. It's great to see wildflowers out in nature; it's also fun to enjoy them in your own garden. This is Lewisia cotyledon, commonly known as Cliff Maids or Siskiyou Lewisia. In the wild it often grows on rocky outcrops, but it's happy gracing a pot on my back deck. Note that this plant was grown from seed, not transplanted from the wild.

TRILLIUMS STILL IN BLOOM. I visited the Azalea Reserve off Kane Road today. It's early for the Western Azaleas there--only a few plants were in bloom. However, there were many Western Trilliums as well as a scattering of our delicate native Calypso Orchids. Lots of Douglas Iris also.
