Grateful to stay busy doing something I love. Some shots of recent work from late September + early October.

The end of our 5th flower growing season is just around the corner now, which means that we slow way down on this side of our business to focus on field cleanup, fall planting, dahlia digging/splitting, and planning for what’s next.

Looking forward to creating something special for these next several weddings as the end of 2026 approaches and we have an opportunity to reflect on all that we have accomplished this season (thanks in huge part to all of you).

We came pretty close to the end of local flower season earlier this week.

Thankfully, frost missed us, and it looks like we have some more time. Based on the forecast, we’re planning to keep The Studio open and stocked during regular hours for at least a couple more weeks!

This time of year, we’re watching more than the overnight low. The dew point gives us clues about how far temperatures could fall, and when it’s near freezing, we pay closer attention.

Clear skies allow heat to escape overnight, while calm conditions let colder air settle around the plants. That cold air also collects in lower spots, which means different parts of the same area can have very different mornings. Even when the forecast calls for temperatures above freezing, frost is still possible.

It’s one of the harder things to explain when people ask how much longer we’ll have flowers. We can be harvesting beautiful stems one afternoon and lose much of what’s left in a single night. So we don’t have an exact “last day” in mind just yet.

There’s a lot of work that goes into getting these flowers to this point, and we always hope for a little more time with them before the season ends.

For now, we’ll keep harvesting and stocking The Studio. We hope you get a chance to enjoy a few more bouquets from the farm, and we’ll keep you posted as things change! 💐

We’ve grown a lot of dahlias. Getting to say “we bred this one” is a first. 💐

Meet our first-ever dahlia bred here at Bella’s Blooms! We’re not professional breeders by any means, but we’re pretty proud of this one. We’re tentatively calling it “Bella’s Sunrise”.

Breeding dahlias starts with seed. Each seed carries a new combination of genetics, so planting seeds from your favorite dahlia won’t actually give you little copies of that flower. Even seeds collected from the same bloom can produce very different results. Dahlias have eight sets of chromosomes. Humans have two. There’s a lot of genetic material involved, and you can’t simply pick your favorite color and petal shape and expect the seedlings to cooperate. You have to grow them and see.

That uncertainty is part of what makes it so interesting. You spend months caring for a plant before you even know what its flowers will look like. And, that first flower is just the beginning. Developing a dependable variety takes several years. You save the promising plants’ tubers, grow them again, and keep watching: Are the blooms consistent? Are the stems strong enough to use in arrangements? Does the plant produce good tubers that survive winter storage?

A seedling can catch your eye in one season. Knowing whether it’s something worth keeping takes longer. It gives us a whole new appreciation for the breeders behind the varieties we love growing. There’s so much work behind a flower that we eventually get to choose from a catalog.

We’re still learning our way through that process. But this is a first for our farm, and we wanted to let ourselves be excited about it! 🌺
