As Bob Morris hosts his 49th consecutive Shangri-La Labor Day party, we turn the clock back to June 1953, when this photo appeared in the Seattle Times with the following caption: "Hatless Bobby Morris finds use for his pockets on a drizzly day. He is the 4-year-old son of Mr. & Mrs. Jack A. Morris Jr. of Route 1, Box 86, Maple Valley."

On the eve of Labor Day weekend, ShangriLa salutes Bob Morris, the driving force behind our fairy tale oasis on the banks of the Green River. This April 1974 photo finds Bob is in the hoist room of the Rogers No. 3 in Ravensdale, an underground coal mine where he worked during the 1970s. All hail Bob Morris, a Vietnam veteran and lifelong resident of Maple Valley and Black Diamond (Photo # RBKN115 by Barry Kombol).

This Labor Day weekend ShangriLaOnTheGreen welcomes Bob Morris and his guests for a 4-day weekend of fun and revelry. Many don't know but the Shangri-La we know today is primarily a function of Bob's vision, planning, and hard work to recreate what was first envisioned by Lawrence Garner in 1953. Bob's Shangri-La Labor Day party has been held every year since 1972 - that's 46 years and counting. Here is Bob working on the Shangri-La Welcome House in 2010.

Another successful wedding at Shangri-La on the Green.

Forever & Always.

CAN WE TALK ABOUT THIS GORGEOUSNESS? Jenn changed into this gorgeous dress after their first dance, and then we stole them away for some perfect golden light down by the river.

This is my favorite part of every wedding day. Because by this time, all of the things have been done & there is just a joy & peace about everything. It’s been the best day & our couples are just so happy to be married.

PLUS THIS PHOTO MAKES ME CRY HAPPY TEARS BECAUSE THEY ARE SO GORGEOUS.

Rusty Holder, R.I.P.

The partners and employees of PCCC are saddened by the loss of Rusty Holder, who passed away yesterday at age 72. James Russell Holder was born May 21, 1945 to Jim Holder and Joan (Bowman) in Seattle. He was nicknamed “Rusty” at an early age and started school in 1951 at the old Ravensdale Grade School. He attended 12 years of school (no Kindergarten in those days) and lettered in all four years of high school sports including football, basketball, baseball and track. He graduated from Tahoma in 1963 and began working construction on commercial buildings in Kent. He was first in the Laborer’s Union and later joined the Teamster’s and the Operator’s. He started his own business, Issaquah Septic and worked at that for a year. In 1977, he moved to Whidbey Island and worked for a land clearing and site development contractor. He also worked for Island County for a year. He moved back to this area in 1984 and went to work for Flintstone Sand & Gravel (now Cadman) before joining Pacific Coast Coal Company in 1985 to work at the John Henry # 1 surface coal mine. Rusty came to work for Palmer in January 1988 as our first official, full time, gravel pit employee. His late father Jim, famous for Dad’s Dirt, helped get Palmer into the topsoil business. Rusty retired from Palmer in 2005. This June 30, 2001 photo of Rusty was taken at Shangri-La.

LOVED LOVED LOVED THE WHOLE EXPERIENCE THERE!!!!!
