All, my grandmother, Lilly Lee Hedgebeth Williams, a Native American belonging to the Haleiwa-Saponi Indian Tribe of Eastern North Carolina. Her striking features stood out due to her Native American heritage. Nicknamed "Lady," she possessed a commanding yet gentle presence. Her role in our household was akin to that of a goddess, and everyone held her in high regard.
I think of her often, cherishing the memories of activities shared with Grandma. Her skills in canning food for the winter, making homemade ice cream, and tending to the garden are just some highlights. The process of making homemade ice cream is a symbol of togetherness and joy we shared. As children we all eagerly participate in churning the mixture, driven by the anticipation of enjoying the delicious treat. This is the only photo that I have of her, but it captures the essence of who she was, as a person, mother, and grandmother, with a nurturing spirit and her willingness to involve the children in her daily routines.
She was indeed a true “Lady.” Who I love deeply.
