Did you know that you can order a custom arrangement made with fresh cut flowers from our farm? Got a special occasion coming up? Whether it’s a birthday, anniversary, get well or just because, we’e got you covered! Please allow 48 hours notice so we can have time to harvest, condition and arrange the flowers. I haven’t had the best luck with growing Rudbeckia. It’s such a slow grower that by the time it’s ready to bloom, all the petals have bug damage😩. I decided to give it one more try before I scratched it from next year’s crop plan. Guess what…there is hardly any evidence of pest pressure! Want to know my secret? Molasses…yep, you heard that right! After seeing several other farmers using molasses on their crops, I thought I’d give it a try. Molasses raises the Brix level of the plants so that the leaf eating pests don’t want to eat them because they can’t digest it. I simply add a small amount in with my compost tea fertilizer and spray all my crops every two weeks or so. Plus, it doesn’t harm the beneficial insects! It’s too early in the season to really see if this truly works, but I’m thrilled with the results on the Rudbeckia so far! Fingers crossed that the caterpillars won’t take over my celosia and zinnias this year thanks to this trick!
