At Hatch X, we’re used to creating experiences people can walk through. But what happens when the audience is watching from behind a screen? This week, we partnered with Massivit and IAAPA North America for a live webinar showcasing what’s possible with large-format 3D printing. While Chris led the conversation, Ian was behind the scenes running three PTZ cameras, switching angles in real time, triggering video playback, and managing a live production with zero room for error.

If you’ve ever watched a smooth webinar, you know the secret: When it looks easy, somebody is working very hard behind the scenes. The goal wasn’t just to talk about what we do. It was to bring people inside our world... to show the technology, the process, and the possibilities in a way that felt real. There was a lot of preparation, a lot of moving parts, and a lot that could have gone wrong but when it was time to go live, the team delivered.

That’s what Hatch X does best: turning complex ideas into experiences people actually remember.

A semi-truck pulled up carrying the future of our 3D printing department. Inside? A massive SLA printer and a giant FGF system... both about to change what we’re capable of producing. Why does that matter? Bigger prints mean fewer parts and fewer parts mean less assembly, less seaming, less sanding, and faster turnaround from concept to finished product. These new machines help us create larger, cleaner, more complex builds while keeping quality high and production moving. Now comes the fun part: uncrating, installing, and putting them to work.

What would you build if size wasn’t a limitation??

Adaptability is the name of the game here at Hatch X

At what point does a block of foam stop being a block of foam? Most people see the material but we see the finished project hiding inside it. Using our Hot Wire Cutter, we’re able to transform simple foam into precision architectural elements like these columns with a level of accuracy and repeatability that’s extremely difficult to achieve by hand.

And that’s the exciting part... Today it’s columns. Tomorrow it could be props, sculptures, signage, themed environments, or something we’ve never built before.

The material is just the starting point but the possibilities are the real product.

What would you make if you could shape foam into almost anything?

POV: You’re giving Mike Wazowski a mani-pedi. What looks like a giant monster is actually hours of shaping, sanding, and refining to get the form just right. Lately, we’ve been reaching for rasps for this part of the process. They remove material fast and make a dusty job surprisingly satisfying.

No two days look the same at Hatch X… so here’s what today looked like!

Building out booth elements, designing the next new build, cutting graphics, painting 3D printed boats, and somehow keeping it all moving with a beeping slushy machine adding just the right amount of chaos.

Custom fabrication is never boring — and honestly, we wouldn’t want it any other way.

We gave you the clues…. can you guess what we’re making?

From waterslides and lifeboats to propellers and the bridge, every piece pointed to the same answer: 🚢

Which clue gave it away first?

Coming out of the pandemic, the trade show and event marketing world looked different. Timelines were tighter, expectations were higher, and our clients needed large-scale, highly engaging environments delivered faster than ever.

So we made a deliberate investment in new technology that could expand both our capabilities and our capacity. The Massivit printer became a turning point for us because it allowed us to move from digital concept to full-scale physical form with speed, precision, and far less production overhead.

Chef Niky was the first major project where we truly put that process to the test. What started as a digital model quickly became printed components, ready for our team to finish using the hands-on craftsmanship that still defines our work.

The printed pieces gave us the foundation. From there, our fabricators assembled, reinforced, sanded, primed, painted, and detailed every surface, blending advanced additive manufacturing with traditional finishing techniques.

The result was more than a character build. It was proof of a new workflow: one that lets us create custom exhibit elements at scale, accelerate production, and still deliver the quality and personality our clients expect.

Since Chef Niky, we have continued to grow our additive manufacturing capabilities, expanded into large-scale seven-axis subtractive manufacturing, and kept investing in the tools that help us solve bigger creative challenges.

This project marked an important milestone for our team. It opened the door to new solutions, new efficiencies, and new ways to bring ambitious ideas to life on time, on budget, and at a scale that gets noticed.
